Current Projects
Bluestone Trail Phase I & II- Construct a new shared use path (for bicycles and pedestrians) from Port Republic Rd. to Pleasant Valley Rd. Funding sources are being explored and design continues for Phase I (between Port Republic Road to Stone Spring Road).
Chicago Avenue Improvements - Corridor study currently underway for improvements on Chicago Avenue from Gay Street to Mount Clinton Pike. The report will outline traffic, engineering and land use recommendations for the corridor, and include a series of conceptual engineering sketches. The study area also includes Mount Clinton Pike from Licolnshire Drive, just beyond the city limits, to Virginia Avenue (VA Route 42), and includes Park Road and Parkwood Drive.
Downtown Master Streetscape Plan - Update to the 2005 Harrisonburg Streetscape Plan currently underway. The goal of this update is to present a unified vision of the downtown area that synthesizes all pertient past and working documents, as well as stakeholder visions, into a single plan. Topics to be discussed for inclusion include: Transportation & Parking, Land Use, Pedestrian & Bicycle Accomodations, Public Transportation, Aesthetics of Public Infrastructure, Community & Economic Development, Utilities, Services, and Technology.
Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road - Major east-west connector with a mix of four and five lane facilities with bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. Click here to find out more.
East Market Street Sidewalk -
- Construct sidewalk on north side of East Market Street from Linda Lane to Spottswood Shopping Center entrance (opposite of University Boulevard.) Currently under design. Construction anticipated to begin in Summer 2010. Funded through VDOT's Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).
- Construct sidewalk on south side of East Market Street from University Boulevard to Evelyn Byrd Avenue. Construction anticipated to begin in Summer 2011. Funded through VDOT's Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).
Linda Lane - Widen Linda Lane from E. Market St. to Country Club Rd. Currently under design.
Reservoir St. - Widen Reservoir St. to a five lane facility with bicycle and pedestrian facilities from University Boulevard to east city limits. Currently under design. 2008 - 2011.

Safe Routes to School (Keister Elementary School) - The city was awarded a project grant from VDOT's SRTS Program for the construction of new sidewalks on South Avenue between S. Main St. and Dogwood Ave., a section of Central Ave., and Maryland Avenue between South High St. and Chestnut Dr. New pedestrian signals and crosswalks will also be added at intersections of South Main St and South Ave and South High St and South Ave. Project is currently under design and expected construction completion date in Fall 2010.
Safe Routes to School (Waterman Elementary School) - City is collaborating with parents and school adminstrators on a grant application for funding for the construction of new sidewalks on Virginia Ave between 2nd and 5th Sts., on 3rd Street between Collicello Street and Stuart Street, Stuart Street between 3rd Street and Chicago Avenue/2nd Street, and Chicago Avenue from 2nd Street to Rockingham Drive. The project will also include road widening for bicycle lanes on Chicago Avenue between Gay Street to Rockingham Drive and new bicycle racks for Waterman Elementary School.
South Main Street - Widen to a five lane facility from I-81 (at Exit 243) to south city limits. Currently under design.
South Regional Study - Study initiated and led by the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Metropolitan Planning Organization (HRMPO) as a coordinated, regional, multi-modal planning study to plan for future development along Route 11 in southern Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. The overall study impact area is bounded to the north by Port Republic Road and Maryland Avenue, to the west by Route 42, to the south by Route 257 (Rockingham County), and to the east by Interstate I-81. West Market Street Rail Crossing Upgrade - Upgrade railroad crossing on West Market Street between Route 42 and Liberty Street with crossing gates, flashing lights and reconstruct sidewalks on both sides.
