The Traffic Engineering Division is responsible for the maintenance and operation of all traffic signals, pavement markings, and signage on public streets in the City of Harrisonburg. Our mission is to provide the safest possible means for our citizens and guests to travel our city’s roadways with minimal conflicts. We strive to provide the best possible level of service for motorized vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians alike.
The Division is also involved in many special events throughout the course of the year. You will find the Traffic Engineering crews working most holidays to support city-sponsored events such as First Night, the Christmas Parade, Valley Fourth and Fridays on the Square to name a few. With safety being our goal, we work to provide effective messages and traffic routing to the traveling public during such events.
You can find details below on how the Traffic Engineering Division fulfills its many duties to meet your needs, including a primer on how traffic signals and coordination work.
