Fire educationFire and Life Safety Education Programs available in the City of Harrisonburg include:

  • Juvenile Firesetter Intervention -designed to educate children with fire setting tendencies and assist the parent with motivation determination. Referrals to mental health are made when indicated.
  • Third Grade Risk Watch lessons - all third graders receive a safety lesson each month during the school year.
  • Seventh Grade Risk Watch lessons - all seventh grade health and P.E. students receive a Risk Watch lesson each month during the school year.
  • High School Seniors - Fire Safety for the Rest of Your Life - All 12th grade English students learn about fire and life safety in a 90 minute class on fire safety after graduation.
  • Child Safety Seat Installations - the Prevention Office coordinates this program, which educates the public on the proper installation of child passenger seats and child passenger safety.  Child Passenger Safety Technician Cathy Stewart is available Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to answer questions and to assist with child safety seat installations.  Call 540-810-0527 to schedule your appointment.  This is a free service funded by Rockingham Memorial Hospital, WHSV-TV3, and the City of Harrisonburg. 
  • Operation NOAH - Fire personnel install smoke alarms for city residents and discuss ways to safely exit the home during a fire. 
  • Safe Kids/Risk Watch Summer Safety Adventure - Safety program from June to August available at apartment and mobile home complexes in the city.  Program includes bike safety, fire safety, water safety and much more.
  • College Safety 101 - A program dedicated to helping college students learn about safety as they live on their own for the first time.  The program is coordinated by the fire department with local off-campus housing units, James Madison University, and the Harrisonburg Police Department.
  • Specialty Programs - Presented to Civic Organizations, Senior Citizens Groups, Preschools and Daycares.  Presentations include fire safety, fall safety, and disaster prevention.
