The Field Operations Bureau is comprised of two Divisions; the Patrol Division and the Special Operations Division. Uniformed Police Officers are assigned to the Field Operations Bureau and have the responsibility of responding to both emergency and non-emergency requests for police services on a continuous basis. The Field Operations Bureau provides specialized police services as needed, such as K-9, Selective Traffic Enforcement, Mountain Bike Patrol, SWAT, Crisis Negotiators, Civil Disturbance Team, Traffic Crash Re-Construction, and Commercial Motor Carrier Safety Inspections. The Field Operations Bureau is dedicated to providing the citizens and visitors of Harrisonburg with the most efficient and effective police services by fostering and maintaining mutual trust and respect, recognizing and solving problems, preventing crime and disorder, promoting traffic safety through enforcement and education, and identifying and arresting criminal offenders.

Captain B.D. Gregory Field Operations Bureau Commander |
Captain Ben Gregory began his career with HPD in 1981 as a Patrol Officer. In 1988 he was promoted to Sergeant and in 1993 he was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Bureau and assigned as the Supervisor of the Bureau. His responsibilities consisted of supervising the department's Investigators and managing the investigations of all major criminal cases. In 1995 Captain Gregory was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and assigned as a Watch Commander. He was assigned as the Special Operations Commander in 1999, and has served as the department’s Negotiator Team Leader and Civil Disturbance Team Commander.
Captain Gregory was promoted the rank of Captain in 2002. He was assigned as the Commander of the Support Services Division until 2003 when he was transferred to his current position, the Commander of the Operations Bureau. His responsibilities include the management of the department’s Patrol Division, Special Operations Division, and serves as the department’s Incident Scene Commander.
