Message from June Hosaflook:
Many times people ask me if I like my job. Usually the question comes after a taxpayer and I have discussed their particular tax situation. They may think their property assessment is too high, or perhaps they failed to file a tax return, were penalized, and are seeking exoneration. The intent of the question is to find out if I enjoy causing their tax-time angst.
Truthfully, the job of Commissioner of the Revenue has an unpleasant side to it, but the rewards far outweigh the drawbacks. Serving the residents of my hometown in this capacity is a privilege and an honor that I never imagined having as I was growing up in Harrisonburg. It is gratifying to be able to provide (along side a wonderfully capable and caring staff) this closest unit of government for the people of Harrisonburg. I have been entrusted with upholding the tax laws of the City and State, and it is my most earnest hope that, in all circumstances, my decisions will be viewed as equitable and fair in order that the good of all are served.
It is with gratitude to the voters of Harrisonburg that I come to work each day. Thank you for allowing me to serve you.
