The City of Harrisonburg Water Treatment Plant (WTP) will reengage adding fluoride to the distribution system beginning October 31, 2018. The fluoride system needed to be upgraded due to safety concerns from a leaking storage tank, so in June of 2016 the system was taken off line.
After months of hard work, planning, and construction by city staff and local tradesmen the WTP is ready to feed fluoride again. City Council members have voted to continue fluoridation of city water; fluoride will be added at the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) recommended dosage of 0.70 ppm. Most customers will have fluoridated water by November 1, 2018, as the water distribution system storage tanks are replenished under normal operational cycles.
