Plumbing Permit

A plumbing permit is required for any new construction, alterations, additions, swimming pools, and/or other types of plumbing work performed in the City of Harrisonburg.

Electrical Permit

An electrical permit is required for any new construction, alterations, additions, swimming pools, and/or other types of electrical work performed in the City of Harrisonburg.

Demolition Permit

A demolition permit is required for any demolition or partial demolition of any building or structure which will improve or upgrade any property owned in the City of Harrisonburg.

Building Permit

A building permit is required for any new construction, alterations, additions, demolitions, accessory buildings, swimming pools, and/or other types of construction, which will improve or upgrade any property in the City of Harrisonburg.

Backflow Prevention Device

A plumbing permit for a backflow device is required for any new construction, alterations, additions, and/or other types of plumbing work performed in relation to a backflow device in the City of Harrisonburg. A permit is not needed for testing the device.

Blasting Permit

Blasting regulations are contained within the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code. All permits, inspections and enforcement procedures concerning these regulations are the responsibility of the Harrisonburg Fire Department.

Building Inspections

The Building Inspections Division of the Department of Planning & Community Development pursues quick and efficient review of plans and inspections for fair interpretation and enforcement of all State-adopted building codes and associated regulations, while educating the public and promoting safety.

Can a Nonconforming Use Continue?

In the event that a nonconforming use of any building or premises is discontinued or its normal operation stopped for a period of 24 consecutive months or more, the use shall conform to the regulations of the current district in which it is located. A nonconforming use shall not be extended, enlarged, reconstructed or structurally altered, except when the enlargement does not compound the existing violation.
