ARPA-Funded Replacement of Kids Castle - In December 2022, Harrisonburg City Council approved utilizing $2.65 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds for the replacement of the Kids Castle play structure at Purcell Park. A detailed public engagement campaign took place in 2019-2020, where community members expressed interest in replacing the aging structure with a new and unique playground utilizing some of the new, exciting options available for modern play structures. The City will put out a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) in late 2023 or early 2024 that will encourage organizations that are interested in constructing the new playground project to submit their interest to the City, after which the City will begin working to select a vendor in anticipation of construction on this project taking place in 2024. While a finalized design for the new playground is not yet available, community members can learn more about the public feedback received in the past few years regarding the Purcell Park Master Plan at the link below. This feedback will be instrumental in the final design of the new play structure.
