The City recommends residents to prepare now for winter weather to come later. Make sure you have an emergency supply kit and when it does snow, stay off the roads if possible and clear sidewalks for pedestrians to safely walk through Harrisonburg.
Harrisonburg Police Department Community Resource Unit: Community Resource Officer, and DARE
The City has excellent Citizen Police Academy that is open to all area residents and held in the spring. That program details the activities of the Police Department. The Harrisonburg Citizen Academy covers all city departments and services as opposed to just the Police Department. The programs compliment each other and the City encourages you to participate in both.
The City of Harrisonburg Animal Care and Control Unit is responsible for enforcing the Virginia Comprehensive Animal Laws, as well as the local ordinances relating to domestic animals. It identifies public safety issues and works directly with the community on animal and pet care issues.
Neighborhoods with speeding traffic and cut through traffic concerns are encouraged to participate in the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program.

If you have a medical emergency, please call 911. If the rescue squad need assistance getting to you they will notify the Public Works Department.
Harrisonburg Police Department's Command Staff includes the Administrative Bureau, Operations Bureau, and Special Operations Bureau.
HPD's K-9 Team is comprised of four officers and one supervisor, all of which are full time handlers.
