In celebration with national Bike, Walk & Roll to School efforts, children, families, school officials, and community leaders across the U.S. will strap on helmets, walk, bike, and roll to school, highlighting the joys of active travel and the need for safety along those routes.

Join us on Wednesday, October 8, for Harrisonburg’s Bike, Walk, & Roll to School Day, a fun and active way for students to get to school safely while building healthy habits! As part of Harrisonburg’s Safe Routes to School Program, we’re encouraging families and students to bike, walk or roll together and experience the joy of alternative ways to travel to school as a community.

How to Participate on October 8:

  • The Safe Routes to School Program will be working directly with elementary schools and City of Harrisonburg staff to promote designated walking or biking routes that are being led, either by HCPS parents or City staff. Middle and high school students can also participate, but no group routes will be formally organized by SRTS.
  • Announcements will be sent through your school on routes and gathering locations for specific areas. Visit Recommended Routes for Biking and Walking to School to learn more about general routes, not specific to this event.
  • School-specific events and safety tips will be shared ahead of time by the student's school. View more information on general guidelines for walking and biking school buses.

We prefer that parents join the walk or ride to school if possible and ensure that proper safety gear, including helmets, is worn. Because this is a Safe Routes to School Program event, a guardian needs to sign in with the route leader if the guardian is not joining on the route for a student to participate. Please find a SRTS leader in a reflective vest to sign in your student.
