Important Announcements:

March 25, 2020 - Until further notice, the City of Harrisonburg Public Works Department and the Recycling Convenience Center will temporarily close to the public as part of the City's response to COVID-19.

At this time Public Works refuse, bulk/yard debris collection and the Mobile Recycling Unit will operate on a normal schedule.  Citizens are encouraged to utilize the Mobile Recycling Unit in lieu of the Recycling Convenience Center.

*Please Note: in the event the Mobile Recycling unit reaches capacity, attendant is required to close early. 



The mission of the Public Works Department is to enhance the quality of life of our citizens by providing efficient public services, protecting the public interest with good environmental policies, enforcing codes, and constructing, operating and maintaining the City's infrastructure.

With more than 100 employees, the Public Works Department provides the following services, including but not limited to, trash collection, recycling, maintenance of city streets, maintenance of traffic signals and street signs, transportation planning, and construction of new transportation facilities.
