Sergeant Manuel Walker Trenary
October 8, 1959
26 Year Veteran of HPD

Sergeant Trenary was shot and killed at approximately 2:55a.m. after he surprised an unkown burglar in the L&S Diner located at 255 North Liberty Street.  The Sergeant was killed by two .25 caliber bullets when he exchanged gun fire with his assailant, which was never apprehended.

Lieutenant Gifford W. Joseph
1942-1970
28 Year Veteran of HPD

Although Lieutenant Joseph does not meet the U.S. Department of Justice criteria for line of duty death designation, he served the Harrisonburg Police Department and the Citizens of Harrisonburg until his death from a heart attack in 1970.

Patrolman Harry L. Phillippy Jr.
1949 - 1973
24 Year Veteran of HPD

Although Patrolman Phillippy does not meet the U.S. Department of Justice criteria for line of duty death designation, he served the Harrisonburg Police Department and the Citizens of Harrisonburg until his death from cancer in 1973.
